With the notable advent in Internet of Things, Amazon now enters into this Market with its announcement of new service as “AWS IoT” in the re:Invent 2015 .

As Amazon describe, it is a managed cloud platform that “lets connected devices easily and securely interact with cloud applications and other devices”. This services (currently in beta) can “support billions of devices and trillions of messages, and can process and route those messages to AWS endpoints and to other devices reliably and securely”. With this, your applications can keep track of and communicate with all your devices, all the time, even when they aren’t connected

One use case can be a car  transmit  On-Road conditions to AWS IoT that process data and send back alerts to other driver warning them slippery roads. Also this data can be stored in S3 for future analysis too.

AWS IoT stores the latest state of a device so that it can be read or set at anytime, making the device appear to your applications as if it were online all the time. This means that your application can read a device’s state even when it is disconnected, and also allows you to set a device state and have it implemented when the device reconnects.

As a AWS Free Tier Part, AWS IoT offers a free tier of 250,000 free messages (published or delivered) per month, for 12 months. Hence, the pricing looks as below:

Region

Price

US East (N. Virginia)

$5 per million messages

US West (Oregon)

$5 per million messages

EU (Ireland)

$5 per million messages

Asia Pacific (Tokyo)

$8 per million messages

A message is a 512-byte block of data processed by AWS IoT – either published to or delivered by the Service. For example, a 890-byte payload is billed as two messages. AWS IoT supports both HTTPS and MQTT protocol(general for IoT devices).

So overall, it is a expected service from Amazon as after it acquired IoT platform “2lemtery” earlier this year. But  also it has to launch this service as part to be in this booming market of IoT.
